     Honorable James Coffin married Mary Severance, daughter of John and Abigail Severance of Salisbury, MA, in 1663. James was the first settler to settle on Nantucket after the purchase. He later became a leading figure in Nantucket politics, serving many terms as Chief Magistrate. James and Mary had fourteen children with twelve surviving into adulthood.²

Lieutenant John Coffin died on 5 September 1711 at Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA, at age 63.^1,2
     Lieutenant John Coffin married Deborah Austin, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Austin. Shortly after his father's death he moved to Martha;s Vineyard, where he became employed as a blacksmith. Most of the Coffin's of Martha's Vineyard are decended from John and Deborah. His tombstone can still be found in Edgartown.²

     Arthur Howland was born circa 1606 at Fenstanton, Huntingdon, Cambridge, England.^1,3 He was the son of Henry Howland and Margaret Alice Aires.^1,2 Arthur Howland married Margaret Reed Walker in 1626.³ Arthur Howland died in 1675 at Marshfield, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 He was buried on 30 October 1675 at Marshfield, MA.²
     Arthur Howland probably arrived from England in 1623/4. He was a planter, yeoman, freeman and Quaker. He was of Marshfield, MA by 1643, having been granted fifty acres of land and some meadow there at North River in 1640. He bought an additional 300 acres of land for 21 pounds sterling, 13 pounds in money and the balance in corn and cattle and spent the rest of his life in Marshfield. Arthur accepted the doctrines of the society of Friends and was fined many times for "Pmiting of a Quaker's meeting in his house". He refused to pay the fines and was committed to jail. He and his wife were fined ten shillings for absenting themselves from "publicke worship" in 1658, but "in respect with his age and low condition" of health, he was acquitted.²

     Margaret Reed Walker was born in 1605 at Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England.¹ She married Arthur Howland, son of Henry Howland and Margaret Alice Aires, in 1626.¹ Margaret Reed Walker was buried on 22 August 1683 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.^2,1
     Margaret Reed Walker was also known as Margaret Reid. Her married name was Howland.
