Lawrence Southwick was born circa 1598 at Kingswinford, Stafford, England.1,2
He was baptized on 24 February 1639 at First Church, Salem.1
He married Cassandra Burnell, daughter of Humphrey Burnell and Margaret (?), on 25 January 1623/24 at Kingswinford, Stafford, England.2
Lawrence Southwick died in 1660 at Shelter Island, Long Island Sound, Suffolk, NY.1
He came from Lancashire, England, to America in 1627, and returned to England and brought his wife Cassandra and son John and daughter Mary to Massachusetts about 1630, and settled at Salem, Mass. (family tradition). We do not find any mention of his name in the public records of Salem until 1639, when he and his family were admitted as members in the First Church of Salem, and two acres of land was given him by the town of Salem to carry on the business of manufacturing glass and earthen ware. There is a tradition that he was one of the first to manufacture glass in America. This two acres of land was called glass-house field, as there were two others engaged in the same business, and the land is so designated to-day on the records and maps of said property, although the manufacture has long ceased to be carried on there. Said land is a valley running easterly from Aborn Street, and is on the south side of what is called Gallows Hill, where several persons were hung during the Salem Witchcraft delusion, a very dark page in the history of sectarian bigotry in Massachusetts. Lawrence and wife Cassandra and son Josiah and daughter Mary were fined, whipt, imprisoned and finally banished for being Quakers, and their son Daniel and daughter Provided were sentenced by the General Court to be sold into slavery. Fortunately however, they were not. Lawrence and wife Cassandra went to Shelter Island, Long Island Sound, being banished under pain of death in 1659, and died there in the spring of 1660 from privation and exposure; his wife died three days after him. John Greenleaf Whittier wrote two poems about their persecution. See |

He name is also spelled Boyes and Boyse. It is of French origin meaning Wood, and probably dates back to the Norman conquest. Du Bois is still a common name in France. In Scotland, whence came most of the Boyes families of America, either directly or from the branches settled in Ulster province, Ireland, the family home is in Forfarshire. Joseph Boyes, who came to America, was a tanner by trade. He settled in Salem, where he was a proprietor in 1639. He was admitted to the church there April 7, 1640, and was made a freeman May 18, 1642. He sold his house and land in 1657. But little is known of him. He left England when Cromwell's men took over his ancestral manor at Brixton. Coffyn's early years in England were during a very eventful time. Intellectual freedom was being claimed as a right for each individual. This period was during the reign of James I. Among the names of the day were William Shakespeare, Francis Bacon and Oliver Cromwell. It was a period when the Puritans were making large gains in the Parliament. He came to the shores of America with his widowed mother, Joanna, his pregnant wife Dionis, and five children, about 1643, to Newbury, MA, then to Salisbury, MA. In 1660 they settled at Nantucket, being one of the first ten purchasers of the island. He was commissioned as the first Chief Magistrate of Nantucket on June 29, 1671, by New York Governor Lovelace and by New York Governor Andres in 1677. In just forty years after Tristram's death his descendants numbered 1,138 born in America. In 1728 the number increased to 1,582. All of them descendants from one couple, Tristram and Dionis Coffin.4,3 |

Edward Starbuck Jr. was the son of Edward Starbuck.1
Edward Starbuck Jr. was born in 1604 at Derbyshire, England.
He married Katherine Reynolds, daughter of William Reynolds and Esther Ruth, circa 1629.1
Edward Starbuck Jr. died in 1691 at Nantucket, Nantucket Island, MA.1
He his family was probably originally Danish before going to England centuries before Edward was born. He came to America in the late 1630's or possibly early 1640's and settled in Dover. He lived in Dover for about twenty years and was a large landholder and quite active in local government. His children were all born in Dover and his wife, Katherine, died there sometime before he moved to Nantucket. His family was the second to live on Nantucket. Edward Starbuck and Tristram Coffin were the first two white men to sail to Nantucket for an inspection trip. It would seem both men were pleased and in 1659 the ten First Purchasers and their partners bought the island from Thomas Mayhew. Edward also accompanied Thomas Macy on the first voyage to settle the island in 1661. Edward then returned in the early 1660's to take up permanent residence on Nantucket where he spent the rest of his life. Edward and Katherine had six children, but only one son, Nathaniel, lived to marry and have children. It appears that all the Starbucks in America descend from Nathaniel.2 |

Rev. Obadiah Holmes was the son of Robert Hulme and Katherine Johnson.1,2
Rev. Obadiah Holmes was born circa 1606/7 at Reddish, Cheshire/Lancashire, England.1,3
He was baptized on 18 March 1609/10 at Didsbury, Lancashire, England.1
He married Katherine Hyde on 20 November 1630 at Collegiate Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England.1,3
Rev. Obadiah Holmes died on 15 October 1682 at Newport, Newport, RI.1
He was a Baptist. The Puritans were irritated by the Baptists who refused to baptize babies and added further irritation by insisting on baptism by immersion only. The Baptists were multiplying rapidly and the Massachusetts authorities were alarmed to the point of considering armed suppression of the Baptists in Rhode Island. Obadiah, John Clarke, and John Crandall were arrested by Massachusetts authorities as they visited a sick friend in Lynn. Clarke protested their heavy fines and Governor Endecott replied that Clarke "deserved death" and "was worthy to be hanged." Why? Because they were Baptists - believing in religious freedom, local church authority, and baptism by immersion only. Holmes refused to pay his fine since he was not guilty of any crime whereupon the Rev. John Wilson, pastor of the Boston Church, hit him and asked God to curse him. Holmes was severly whipped (thirty lashes) and carried his scars for life. Holmes said later about the whipping: "...having joyfulness in my heart, and cheerfulness in my countenance...I told the magistrates, 'you have struck me as with roses.1,4' " He was a glassmaker and weaver.1 |
